Hussam Merei(Lieutenant)

His life story
Son of Jamila and Salman. Born on February 2, 1979 in the Druze village of Hurfeish. He grew up in the village with his four brothers — Marri, Munem, Wassam and Bassam — and his four sisters — Duaa, Safaa, Abir and Musanna — in a warm and close-knit family.
He began his studies at the elementary school in Horfish, and later attended the Air Force Technical School in Haifa. After a year, he transferred to the "Mevot Yam" school in Makhmoret, where he completed his high school studies and successfully graduated from the twelfth grade.
In November 1997, Hussam enlisted in the IDF and was assigned as a fighter in the Air Force's anti-aircraft unit. He distinguished himself with his dedication and skills, and later completed a company commander course and an officer course. Upon completion of his training, he served as a battery commander, and was later assigned to the position of reconnaissance officer.
In November 2000, Hussam began his permanent service in the IDF, and a few months later he was promoted to the rank of lieutenant. His commander, Lt. Col. Oren, said about him:
"Hussam was pleasant, smiling, ready to help and contribute at any time. As a friend - everyone wanted to be near him, and as a commander - they trusted him blindly and wanted to go on any mission with him."
Hussam was a handsome, lively young man, with a big heart and much loved by all his family and acquaintances. He radiated confidence, responsibility and calmness, and always gave a sense of trust to everyone around him. His friends used to call him "an officer and a gentleman", thanks to his noble character and honorable behavior. He loved to travel around the country, spend time with friends, and often hosted them at his home in Hurfish.
On September 12, 2001, Hussam died in a Tel Aviv hospital, four days after drowning at sea and being taken to a hospital in critical condition. He was twenty-two years old at the time of his death.
Hussam was laid to rest in the military section of the cemetery in the village of Hurfeish. He left behind his parents, four brothers and four sisters.
Hussam's memory remains engraved in the hearts of all who knew him - as a dedicated commander, a loyal friend, and a rare person in character and goodness.
