His life story

Son of Himesh and Adiv. Born in the village of Usafia on July 1, 1945. He spent his childhood in the village, where he completed his elementary education. He began high school, but was forced to drop out after a year to help his family bear the financial burden.

In 1965, he was drafted into compulsory service in the IDF and served in Brigade 300. Due to the service of another brother, he was released earlier than expected, in March 1966.

In 1966 he married Rinot. The two built their home in Osafia, and their first son, Amal, was born. Nohad was a devoted father and loving husband, who saw his family as the center of his life and devoted all his energy to its well-being.

He was known in his community as an active socialite, with a big heart and a prominent presence. He was a key partner in social and sporting activities in the village, and particularly excelled in volleyball – first as an enthusiastic player and later as a coach and instructor of youth teams.

After several years as a civilian, he volunteered on May 20, 1973, to serve in the Border Guard, continuing a family tradition of Abu Rukun's sons in security service. He began as a police officer for special duties in Company 9, where he excelled and earned recommendations to serve as a full-time police officer. In 1976, he was officially recruited and assigned to Company 22, and later to Company 21. Throughout his service, he served as a fighter, diary keeper, and anti-tank operator, and was successful in every position to which he was sent.

His commanders described him as an exemplary soldier – dedicated, professional and beloved by his comrades. His relationships with his commanders went beyond the work context and became a courageous friendship. His love of sports continued during his service, and he represented the Border Guard and the IDF in volleyball competitions and led his teams to impressive achievements.

On November 4, 1983, during the Galilee Peace War, Nohad was killed in the second Tyre disaster – a car bomb attack that caused the collapse of the government building in the city of Tyre. The disaster killed about sixty people, including twenty-eight members of the security forces.

Sergeant Major Nohad Abu Rukun was 38 years old when he fell. He was laid to rest in the family plot in Usafiya. He left behind a wife and a son.

As a sign of respect and commemoration, the volleyball team in Isfahan is named after him.
